The Kathmandu-based diplomatic community is set to get its first woman head.
German Ambassador to Nepal Verena Graefin von Roedern will take charge as the head of diplomatic corps (Dean) next week.
The current Dean, Japanese Ambassador Tatsuo Mizuno has completed his tenure and is returning home soon.
Roedern is expected to assume charge as new Dean on Sunday, a senior Foreign Ministry official said. “She will be the first woman Dean in Kathmandu’s diplomatic history,” the official said.
The diplomatic corps is not given formal recognition by the host country but can be referenced to by the official order of precedence and taken as a symbol of diplomatic culture.
The Dean leads the 26-member diplomatic community in Kathmandu including United Nations and works as a bridge between the government and diplomatic community in many ways.
